Scope and Contents note

A collection pf papers, letters and ephemera relating to Charles Alfred Bredin. A Diary and some materials set during his time in Co. D, 317th Machine Gun Battalion, 81st Division, AEF during the first World War. He later served with the 15th Infantry Regt. in China. Correspondence with his fiance, Grace Manning (AKA Olivia Lee Bredin). Bredin was originally from New York, and later moved to Tulsa in the 1930s.

Alfreda came to see me off also Aunt Marie and Mr. Louie Reed came & sang and prayed and left a little Y.W.C.A. kit with me and a [sweater] outfit.

Sat. Called on Annie Eriksen before breakfast also Charlie & Mrs. Eriksen. She gave me my last meal at home, 2 eggs coffee and then I left with Annie to the subway station. Walter came home from Pittsburgh just in time to see me off and give me his penknife & valise. Then I said goodbye to them all, Aunt Mary, Violet, Elsie, Walter & Papa. I then reported to [?] board #14 and was made a corporal in charge of 12 men. Elsie & Papa came then and saw me on the street. Left on subway train and saw [Klosenberg] & Wm. Bayne at 174th St. and Papa handed me 2 bananas on the train. We rode to Fulton St., then on ferry to Jersey City and left on splecial train of 14 cars for Camp [Hancock], Augusta Georgia at 3 P.M. We passed Trenton, N.J., W. Phila.

[Continued from page 1] West Phila. got an apple from the Red Cross. Wilmington Baltimore, Wash. D.C., Richmond, Emporia VA. Florence, N.C. Denmark, S.C. arrived at Augusta 3 A.M. May 27th Mon being 36 hours on the train. I hour march to camp by moonlight through the tall pine trees and a hot meal and 2 hours sleep.

Fri. 31st of May Good grub, resting after inoculation. Tent inspection o.k. Wrote to Elsie [Bredin] Mrs. [Malenberg] & others.

Sat. June 1st 1918. Scrubbed out our tent before 12 92 degrees in shade - shower bath - wrote home. Martial law was [read] out to us.

Sunday June 2nd 1918. Took walk to lake and around it - 100 degress heat. fine dinner & lemonade.

Mon. June 3rd 1918. Good grub, measured for uniforms Wrote 3 letters to Anna Louie & Pop & drilled - 1st rain here [?]

Tues June 4th 1918. Drilled heavy to-day and drilled a squad. Mailed Mrs. Frank C. Anderson of [?], N.Y. R D #71 her card back telling her I got her W.C.T.U. kit o.k. Had a talk with Harry Adamsen.

Wed. June 5th 1918. Good grub, wrote to Walter & Anna E. got special delivery letter from Papa, passed nervous exam - ination, bought 2 [crullers] for $0.05. Checked [?] on my insurance papers #3,321,651. Harry Adamsen called on me.

Thurs. June 6th 1918. Fine grub, got letter from Annie E., burned up loose leaves in forest all A.M. mess-making citizens out of foreigner's writing home, bought safety razor for $0.35.

Fri. June 7th 1918. Fine grub, Colonel Applin of English M.G.T.C. talked to us from grand stand of dry reservoir, dinner, then hung out in the woods until we got our boxes filled with clothing. I helped carry a box of leggins (4), supper, got mail from Elsa Walter & Papa & Larkin and I got my new uniform & wrote Afreda & Anna E.

Sat. June 8th 1918. Mailed cotton bale to Elsie as a souvenir of the South. Wrote to Pape & Anna. Had 1st Sat. inspection at 10 A.M. Drilled 1 hour before retreat in [Co.] street. Washed clothes and went to Y.M.C.A.

Sun. June 9th 1918. Shower baths, woods, policed up, no mail, wrote 6 letters $ 6 postals home.

Mon. June 10th 1918. Got mail from May Lewry, Anna E & Papa. Wrote cards in reply and letter to May ". Worked in kitchen all day. Got 2nd inoculation & a stiff arm.

Tues. June 11th 1918. Got box of Loft's candy from Anna Eriksen. I mailed 3 cotton bales to M.L., A.C.E. & L.R.

Wed. June 12th 1918. Got box of A&S candy from May Lewry and letters from H. Johansen, & Papa & Freda. I was 1 out of 4 to stick in double quick time.

Thurs. June 13th 1918. Breakfast - drill - no mail.

Sat. " 15th 1918. Visited city of Augusta after inspection rode down by auto $0.25 and back by trolley for $0.05 with [Pvt] Miskinis. Visited soldiers club - [Treene] St. - had sodas and mailed 3 letters in town.

Sun. June 16th 1918. Snapped a lot of pictures with Crosby Miskinis & myself. Took it easy. 3 letters from home. Mon. June 17th 1918. Got a box of candy & 3 handkerchiefs from Papa. Rained all day.

Tues. June 18th 1918. Changed blouse, got postal from May Lewry. Signed petition for better grub and better cooked. Got lecture for it. 25th Recruiting Co. 2nd [?].

Wed. 19th 1918. 3rd inoculation. 1st batch transferred and received letter from May Lewry.

Thurs. 20th 1918. Moved to 18th Training Co. M.T. Depot Group 2. Was night guide & tallest man in Co. Wrote postals to all friends etc.

Fri. 21st 1918. Drilled 2 hours 9.30 A.M. to 11.30 A.M., dinner, detailed to Q.M. Dept. and helped carpenter out. Got mail from 25th Co. from Papa & Walter. I sold $0.25 worth of papers. Wrote postals.

Sat. 22nd 1918. Shaved, went to exhibition drill, dinner, washed towels etc. Capt. Emerson Got mail at old mail Co. 1 from Elsie Johnson 1 from Violet postals from Anna & Chas. Eriksen.

Sunday 23rd June, 1918. Had coffee, shredded wheat & milk & bread. Took 8 pictures of Henry Adamsen and myself on a long walk. Dinner. Went to town, Augusta, with Frank Writh and came back early.

Mon. 24th of June 1918. Was drilled to pieces by Capt. Emerson. chafed between the legs. Got a box of gumdrops & salted peanuts from May Lewry.

Tues. 25th June 1918. Everything o.k. Letters from home.

Wed. 26th " 1918. " o.k. Sent to non-com school. Letter from Anna C. Eriksen, YMCA 232, to sleep.

Thurs. 27th June 1918. Letter from Walter that Victor Bloomquist is dead at the front. Big howl about grub. Went with Harry Adamsen to Y and Knights of Columbus.

Fri. 28th June 1918. Drilled to beat the band - attended non-com school & movies for soldiers at Y 232 outside for soldier's instructions.

Sat. 29th June 1918. Inspection, must sew hat [?] on cards to Alfreda Violet May & Charles E. P.J. Casey George [?] Karger. Writh, [?] & Bossey.

Sunday June 30th 1918. Had walk with Harry & Abel played clarinet all morning. Wrote to [Mrs. Macklenberg] & others.

Mon. July 1st 1918. Drilled & foot inspection. Dry [Bowl/Bond] movies at night. Fire in tent 19th Co.

Tues. July 2nd 1918. Corporal Casey received his stripes. Went on 12 hour Q.M. guard at 6.45 P.M.

Wed. July 3rd 1918. Got back from Q.M. guard at 9 A.M. Took shower & wrote letter to Elsie V. Bredin. Got letter from Elsie Johnson telling me of her father's death (my uncle) Gustave June 27th 4.50 P.M. [?] a bit. Got letters from Alfreda & May Lewry.

5th of July 1918. Received $14.30 - 1st pay in National Army expect a transfer tomorrow.

Sat. July 6th 1918. Got card from Papa Letter & pictures from Walter & letter from [cousin] Ruth Lindberg. Taking it easy at Y 76.

Mon. July 8th 1918. Got letter from Anna & didn not move yet. Fierce rain storm. Wrote to Anna, Papa & May.

Tues. July 9th 1918. Had mushmelon & shredded wheat at breakfast not moved by noon. Harry Ad. & I at Y 76 [street] night.

Wed. July 10th 1918. Packed up and MOVED to co. D 317th Machine [?] Battalion, Camp Hancock, Ga. 81st Division, 161st Infantry Brigade, 6th Army Corps Called Wildcats [or] Stonewall Division. Worte home to the folks, had a fine dinner but I am separated from my old pals.

Mon. " 22nd Stopped at Washington D.C. & marched up N.E. 1st St. & back again.

Tue. July 23rd 1918. Arrived at Camp Mills, Garden City, Long Island, N.Y. at 10.30 A.M. hot day. Helped emptied baggage car of trunks etc.

Wed. July 24th 1918. At camp swatting flies in the kitchen, songs at night with clarinet.

Thurs. July 25 1918. Two months in service. Washed clothes. Visited village of Hampstead at night & spent $0.60 on soda & cards & $0.40 on razor blades. Mr. Reed called.

[Continued from page 9] on me at 1.30 P.M. in full uniform of letter carrier Had a fine talk with him which was last I saw of him before I left for Europe.

Fri. 26th Went to 1338 [Stebbins] Ave. Met [Klosenberg] Earl Apperson Ken Loeffler. I met Alfreda & Violet on the way home from N.J. and Elsie at home. Cried a bit I was so excited and upset. Called on Anna Ericksen and said goodbye to the piano teacher, Mrs. & Charlie Ericksen and then all alone with Anna for an hour or so then to Papa. I telephoned from Freeman St. Station to him at Bliss St. Corner & asked him to wait for me. We had a long talk and a dinner at Childs 2 A.M. at Gr. C Went home again at 4 A.M. & saw Walter slept 1 hour had breakfast at home and then I kissed them all goodbye -- maybe for the last time. I hope not.

Sat. July 27th 1918. Arrived at Camp Mills by trolley and a free auto ride at 12.30 P.M. Went right to work getting ready for "over there"

Tue. " 30th ". Left Camp Mills, reached pier R.M.S.S. Line 42 N.R. Manhattan via ferry boat bound [brook] from L.I. City depot at noontime Wrote letters & cards to friends.

Wed. July 31st 1918. Left pier at 10 A.M. and anchored down the bay of N.Y. Left at 2 P.M. for somewhere in Europe.

Aug. 7th 1918. Wed. On detail 2nd steward 2 boat drills.

" 8th " Thurs. " " " " again because I didn't the day before. 2 boat drills, scrubbed two floors & tables, carried flour bags & [box] of apples. ate 4 of them. Lecture by our 1st Lieut [Mojiski] on the [job].

Aug. 9th 1918. Physical training & night boat drill met by destroyer and I wrote 5 letters. Pete Larkin [B.O. & Ref. Co] F.E. [Cave] Chas. Loeffler & H. B. Lewry.

Aug. 10th 1918. Sat. Wrote letters to everybody as I passed Scotland & Ireland on way to Liverpool.

Aug. 11th 1918. Sun. Arrived at Liverpool 2 A.M. and we docked in river until afternoon when we got off about 12 and after a short march to train got a cup of coffee & bun & letter from the King of England to send home & one to Anna. 11 days on boat got cinders in my eyes at Birmingham saw [Creve] [Wigan] [Wednesbury] etc. Led to [camp].

Aug. 12th 1918. Had cinders removed from my eyes at 10 A.M. after a sleepless night. I heard

[Continued from page 12] Julius Ceaser taking Winchester over 2,000 years ago. 23 kings ruled here. The Gospel Oak Tree 3 miles away under which Constantine & St. Augustine preached to the lords of old. A stump now protected by a fence.

Tues. Aug. 13th 1918. On detail to Y.M.C.A. to sweep up floor and wash cups. Met [Wrieth] [?] & Karger. Sent 3 pence stamps on letters to L.R.A.E. & Papa.

Wed. Aug. 14th 1915.[1918] Marched to Winchester Castle & Cathedral and saw butter cross & High [Str.] and the old gate. Bought a box of candy for $0.38 1 & 7 pence. Wallaces. Knights of the Round Table King Arthur. Well since year 169. Saxons in bear skins & mud & paint. I am in Camp Winnall Down.

Thurs. Aug. 15th 1918. At Dinam Hut Y.M.C.A. Was marched to a little village where we saw thatched roofs of houses. 1st class private Caskey & Mechanic Meyer reduced to privates. Drilled on field. Bought plate of apricots at N.A.C.B. for 4 pence.

Fri. Aug. 16th 1918. Drilled all A.M. - No drill in P.M. Supper at 5 P.M. and orders to get ready to move. I wrote to Walter, Anna E. & Bloom. [Louie] Reed & Chas. Ericksen.

Sat. Aug. 17th 1918. Slept all Fri night on a dock at Southhampton after a shrot train ride from Winchester. Marched through the [?] to a rest camp 2 miles away to sleep in a park. [Chewtal] and I sneaked out of camp & bought lime & lemon soda, 1/4 pound of [caramels] and lots of postal cards. Mailed them to all my friends. Had cocoa & a bun for ourselves.

Sunday Aug. 18th. In camp to 2 o'clock when we left for the docks again. I saw the [?] with an Indian crew and [?] a Chinese crew [on] a Standard Oil boat and we were placed on board the Alberta. We left 11 P.M. on bright moonlight for France. The boad made 28 miles when we landed at Cherbourt O.K. and marched uphill to

[Continued from page 14] Monday Aug. 19th 1918. a rest camp where we will rest awhile 14 men to a small tent meant for 4. I was on guard all the day. I wrote a few letters too.

Tues. Aug. 20th 1918. Ordered to pack up to leave. Had breakfast early and dinner at 10.30 A.M. Left on [?] [?] & Cherbourg and rode on cattle train to ?. We stopped at Caen for supper. I slept very little and

Wed. Aug. 21st 1918 I woke up with a pain in the neck. Wrote a letter to [Louie] Reed & May Lewry. I passed St. Cyr at 9.04 A.M. passed Wissous 10.50 A.M. passed 57th Engineers just before 2 P.M. [?] 2.58 [?] Everybody slept on ground in bright moonlight.

Thurs. Aug. 22nd 1918. Woke up shivering, shaved, [shook] [50] spiders & 1 lizard out of my clothes. Staid behind on baggage detail and worked. No gasoline for motor trucks.

[Continued from page 15] So we had to march to our village of Bermon where we billet for training. We picked up all the men who dropped out of the march 2 [medical] 10A 2 Hd. Qts. 20B 20C. We didn't pick up any C, D men because they left men with them to bring them in. We got our meals from [Schwan] the cook and then slept away on the grass in the court yard. 10 P.M. [?] [?] [?]

Fri. Aug. 23rd Slept till 11 A.M. except to eat Bk. Woke up and put on details. Had sweet coffee Oh boy! Placed on guard at 5 P.M. sold [?] for 10 cents.

Sat. Aug. 24th 1918. Still on guard in front of cafe. Had potatoes & meat & jam. I live in an old house 2nd floor in a big room (22 men) dust 6 inches thick and we put straw on the straw. Walked with Kramer & [Bergerman] around village. Wrote letter to Pop. To bed at 9 P.M.

Sun. Aug. 25th 1918. 3 months in service. Had [new] potatoes meat coffee & 1/2 slice of bread for breakfast. Marched out with towel & soap for bath. Back for dinner. Met Walter ? of 318th Co. B Went our for blackberries after supper.

Mon. Aug. 26th 1918. Opened up our boxes and fixed up our machine guns and received instructions on them. Our P.O. address is 791 [now]. Had bacon [bread] 2 potatoes cabbage & coffee for supper.

Tues. Aug. 27th 1918. Had pancakes corn syrup coffee & bread for breakfast. Drilled on nonmenclature of m. [machine] guns about 1[mile] [away]. Had [3] potatoes 2 biscuits & [piece] [of] bread water & string beans for dinner. I am tired.

Wed. Aug. 28th 1918. Fine meals with apple sauce. Had a hike with pack to [?] and m.g. [machine gun] drill. Wrote to May Lewry & Elsie Violet & Papa bought card for $0.10 and [grapes] $0.20

Sunday Sept. 1st 1918. Wrote all morning to Mr. Reed, Anna Ericksen Alfreda & Papa Elsie Johnson May Lewry & Anna Bloomquist. Had scrambled eggs & bacon potatoes bread & coffee & [sirup] for Bkft. Had prunes for dinner 1st time since in France. Was taken down to brook for bath. It was very cold and the sun was not out. Wrote to Louis Apperson

Mon. Sept. 2nd 1918. [Bermon] labor day. Very cold on arising. I work on machine gun #122893. There must be mountains not far away. Drilled on guns sighting & camoflaging. Bought $0.10 worth of prunes ([demi] franc).

Tues. Sept. 3rd 1918. Walter is 22 yrs old today. Received 47 francs & 6 centimes pay for July Bought 2 francs of figs & prunes. Early to bed. Wrote [?] letter & had an easy day of drill. Paid barber 1 france 40 centrimes for haircut.

Wed. Sept. 4th. Meat & gravy bread butter & coffee for bkft. Fellow gave me two spoons of honey. Cold A.M. on arising. Gas mask drill 1st time I had 1[one] on Bought 4.86 francs worth of stamps & mailed them to Pop. Bought 1 franc worth of grapes. Nice talk with Sargent Newbold. Walter is 22 yesterday.

Thurs. Sept. 5th 1918. Eyesight tested as to aiming Mine is pretty good. Took gun apart blindfolded. Mailed letter to Pop & Florence [Koehler]

Fri. Sept. 6th 1918. Wrote letter to Florence A. [Marqu...]] Had contest between platoons on mounting & dismounting guns. Bought 3 francs of stuff from Y.M.C.A. man who came into town to-day. 1 pkg of [Minerva] biscuits, 1 pkg meniver chocolate, 1 pkg [W..], 1 box matches, 1 pkg [M..] & one cigar & writing paper.

Sunday Sept. 15th. Cleaned up billet. bought candy & figs. Had light meals. Left on advance detail with Lt. Smith behind B Co. Fixed up supper supplies. Had salmon, corned beef potatoes coffee & bread for supper. Slept on field. Was awakened 11 P.M. to work on ammunition [?]. To sleep at last. We are last Co. to leave.

Mon. Sept. 16th. At Ervy France [?] Had breakfast. carry another blanket & bed sack with us. I carried Alfreda's silk [bag] outside of my pack with my sweater & [towels] soap etc in them. Passed [Auxon] Jessie Brian laval [?] up [?] [?]

Tues. Sept. 17th 1918. Rode till 10 AM to [Bruzen or Bruyere] It is a nice little town only one county away from Alsace and not a 100 miles from Berne Switzerland. I bought figs apples also 1 can of condensed milk [Aurora] brand in the French Canteen 2 fr 10. a pen & a bottle ink & a can of sardines for 1 fr. 10.

Wed. Sept. 18th 1918. Slept in barn - got lost in night trying to get to water closet Had corned beef, canned tomatoes, 2 slices bread & sweet coffee. Washed at town pumps and shaved before breakfast. Rainy. 2 German airoplanes flew about last night firing [bombs]. Antiaircraft machine guns returned fire at them We are in [Bruvielleures] Bruyere

Sept. 19th 1918 Thurs. That aeroplane killed 4 men on soldier's train. Had drill in fields & gas masks. The extra detail sargents are now with the Co. I bought 1 can of sardines & 3 francs worth of nuts. Had lemonade with Krug. To bed at 9.

Sept. 20th 1918. Fri. Drilled in terrific rain in woods Called back at 10.15 AM and told to get ready for to leave by 3 P.M. Got 2 meals to take with us. Marched 18 kilometers stopping once for a meal on the way & about 10 kilometers was all up hill over a mountain. Nearly all the forest and the scenery was very fine. Coast artillery [coming] all the time.

Sept. 21st 1918. Sat. Reached [Noncompatelize] at 9.30 P.M. Went to sleep in a barn with all my clothes on and woke up shivering. Very cold and heavy frosty dew all over. Had 6 cups chocolate at YMCA #476.

Tues. Sept. 24th Got 2 letters from Papa Aug 12th & 15th. Rainy - drilled inside got piece of chocolate candy for 90 centimes at YMCA 2fr English walnuts & 2 fr hazelnuts.

Fri. Sept. 27th 1918. No retreat or revelle on account of air raids last 3 days. [Have] bomb exploded and frightened us so we put on gas masks at dinner Wrote to Papa and Anna C. Eriksen.

Sat. 28th 1918. On guard up till supper time. Had it easy. Had a nice chat with Corporal Harold D. Cohagen. Box 623 Supulpa, Oklahoma 928 no. 10th Expect to leave [Nompatelize] for St. Die Sunday night. Had 4 cups hot chocolate at YMCA #472.

Got some sleep. Got slumgallin, coffee & bread with moldy taste to it. Same for the night. Active firing all day. 1 or 2 airships shot at. Went on watch again at 6 to 12 P.M. with Metcalf. Very dark. Sunday Oct. 6th 1918. Stood watch with Barrett at Grenade post #2 from 10 PM to 2 AM last night. [Dydex] [denim] Stood by at 5 to 6 AM. Went for chow. Washed myself in the valley. Ate fresh bread, coffee syrup at breakfast. Shaved with straight razor 1st time since the 2nd Am writing here now and letters. Artillery firing very close to us Wrote to Anna Bloomquist & Elin Johnson & Papa.

Mon. Oct. 7th 1918. Oct. 4th Co. A. 324th after 15 min. barrage advanced to 1st line trench and got 20 killed 1 wounded 3 captured of best German troops 1 nervous soldier fired to quick or they would have got them all. Stood watch 2 AM to 6 AM with Hdqtrs. man --- Let French patrol in 6 AM. Last night (6th) Americans sent out 9.45 PM a terrific barrage.

Stood watch 6 PM to 10 PM about 8:30 PM Germans sent over a gas barrage and red rocket & green rocket was sent up by infantry I put on my gas mask for about 1 minute & then I took it off. Corporal notified the Lieut. About 9 PM Sergeant Roberts & [Reid] came over from G. Hdqts & told us to look out for [gas] [Lambeth] [?] [?] 85 mm shots bursting all the time boom bang & then bang. They burst 2 [?] before gone. Went to bed at last with rumors of peace in my ears from the French papers.

Tues. Oct 8. Stood by at 5 to 6 AM. Ate my slice of bread up with Jones and stood with him as I did not feel like sleeping then. It is raw & raining.

Detail under Corporal Wilson caught under explosions of shrapnel which just cleared the tree tops over our section of emplacements. The closest yet since here. Sargent Voorhees in charge now. Man & boy found by Capt. of "F" Co. probably killed by patrols. They took helmets & rifle from them, the hair sticking to the helmets they had been there so long. We ducked many shrapnel shells all afternoon. They came closer to us than any since we are here. Private threw 2 hand grenades at [?] in wire entanglements and nearly killed our own men. Two patrols met to our right.

Oct 15th Tues. 1918. Heard that German's had received 7 days to remove artillery back to regional line and then arange for peace. We heard wagons rumbling during the night. Nasty [?] [?] by negroes. Saw 2 German post cards. 15th N. G. with 372nd. Chow for supper coffee bread rice & bacon. Orders are to be ready to move in 2 days for active front. No candles to be had. We are in complete darkness to move about in.

Oct. 16th Wed. Left at 12 midnight after we had taken ammunition down to barn on road. Lieut. Johnston of intelligence dept. shot by machine gun while on reconnaissence at 5 p.m. the 15th. We left after being relieved by the French for the barn waited till 2 a.m. for Lieut. Boykin. We marched to [Bricommount]. Stopped in barn there till the others came. Left at 4 a.m. for St. Die. Met 2 ditched wagons and left. Got letter from Alfreda.

Thurs. Oct. 17th. Woke up at 6 a.m. and washed & shaved and washed & changed socks on my feet. Had breakfast at jam-butter-bread coffee & meat after 9 a.m. because we had lost our salt bag. Mules & horses seem o.k. Ostend Lille & Domai taken yesterday.

Sunday Oct 20th 1918. Had breakfast at 8 A.M. of coffee, bread, molassas & potatoes & beef. Examined feet and put powder on them. Slept in hay & straw, very warm in barn. Expect to leave L'orme 7 A.M. tomorrow on a 14-15 mile hike.

Mon. Oct 21st 1918. Arose at 4.30 A.M. brought wood down to cook and was 1st in line. Had rice & meat steak molassas & bread & butter coffee. Left L'orme at 2 A.M. on 14 or 15 mile hike full pack.

Tues. Nov. 5th Verdun. Heavy artillery firing all early A.M. Slept in my overcoat against pack and raincoat under me. Had salmon [beans] [potatoes] dried hard tack & bread coffee last night. Bacon (jam plenty) bread [hardtack] potatoes dried & sweetened coffee with milk in it. Was at burial of John R. Patterson Private 101st F.A. Battery "D" Died of wounds 11-4-18. Left after early supper at 3.00 for new position M. 7 west of Verdun. We passed Verdun & [moved] at 9 P.M. 12 kilometers (7 1/2 miles). Stood guard from 9.10 to 11.10 1.10 to 3.10 5.10 to 7.10 A.M. Very heavy H.E. shells sent all night by us & returned by Germans in strings of fire for 30 min. 2 on nights with Gold. 3 on alone at night. 12 men returned from patrol 2 days & nights out. Nov. 9th 1918 Sat. Received orders to advance at 8 o'clock at 5 A.M. got hard tack & 1 can of [bully] beef for each 2 1/2 men and I left w/ Lieut. Stillwell's platoon in reserve (1 day's rations only) We took our ammunition guns machine guns water boxes gunner's gas mask tripod & grub. I carried 1 box of ammunition, gunner's gas mask & 1 bag with 4 cans of bully beef I swiped. I joined Wilson's at last minute, we walked through a system of trenches after leaving the Melz & Verdun railroad track and came out on top of the hill and down again into a valley. We carried on through a village which the Germans deserted and 5 or 6 sets of bared wire on the double quick We went over the top of a trench deserted and through a swamp and then we went to the left behind a forest (Germans bombarded a French wagon on the road on the hill as we were, Sargent Sam Jones deployed us

I waded through a creek and lost my box of ammunition and hand grenade I picked up in the trenchs but I rescued my 4 cans of chow in a bag. It was very cold water and I hollered Save Me Save Me. We got on top of Hill 270 after leaving Death Valley and we were caught by machine gun fire & snipers. Whang! Zip! Olsen and I crawled flat on our bellies and everytime we moved a sniper shot at me and Olsen. It was so cold our breath gave us away. I finally left the gunners gas mask on the hill as the cover wouldn't stay down & got in my way. A little later it got so warm I forgot my raincoat in

[Continued from page 47] a shell hole. We were taken into an apple orchard and deployed I man every 5 yds apart and along a small creek. The German artillery kept up a continous shellfire 1 landing every 20 seconds for 2 days and 1 night. We advanced through another barbed wire entanglement and dug into 150 yards of trenches and captured & connected them the German trenches. I stood guard (2) twice shivering in wet clothes and a flare light or 2 going up each minute almost all night and we thought we would be seen surely but luck was with us We retreated from this trench.

Major Steve sent a carrier pigeon at 7.30 A.M. saying we cannot advance [?] - [?] because we are held up by our own artillery barrage & the enemies machine gun nests in front of us. We need assistance as we have no water or food and no airplanes. We were relieved 6 P.M. by the 321st & Co. A & C we hastily took advantage of this welcome relief and reached our own dugouts by 9 P.M. Dead man's Hill I stood watch from 12 to 3 with Abner.

We thought there was something with our ears. All day & night both sides sent up rockets of red white & green & parachutes etc.

Tues. Nov. 12th 1918. We had [coffee] slum & bread & hardtack and made up our packs & blanket rolls and took down the French St. Mary Ann's machine guns to the [roads] beginning and we marched off to camp [?] and had a meal of cabbage corned beef & coffee & bread. I bought 10 bars chocolate at 1/2 franc 4 pkgs [raisin] at 1/2 franc & 1 pkg lemon snaps and ate most of it while on guard at Wagon Train in moonlight last night 8 to 12 mid. Warmed up at fire with 2 Co. A men. Been very cold & freezing these last 2 days.

Sunday Nov. 24th 1918. Left [Chardoyne] for [Harronville] passed through Brillon blankets stolen. Stole can jam grape [?] from wagon & divided up with [Chantel] Shaved 1st time in 3 days. Got here in 1/2 day after a stiff march. Saw Major General Bailey [who] pass by in auto. Mail at night from Alfreda, Walter & Papa Larkin 1 R.T. Delany 3 & [Arthur] Bloomquist.

Ate at Isles of Britain Hotel, saw show at YMCA and took a walk along river and bought about 15 francs of postal cards. Cashed $1.00 money order got 5.80 francs. George & I are at "Y" again writing. Wrote a bushel of cards.
